The Magic and Science of Sulfur Hexaflouride

Although sulfur hexafluoride is a gas, it is about 5 times denser than air, meaning that its molecules are packed more tightly together, and each molecule weighs more than an air molecule as well (molecular weight 146 vs 29).  So in the video below, the light tin foil boat (initially filled with air) floating on a sea of sulfur hexaflouride exhibits the same sort of bouyancy you'd expect from a real boat floating on a sea of water. And as you fill it with the more dense and heavy material, it sinks, just as a real boat taking on water would.

You can see a really clear explanation of this effect, why if you inhale sulfur hexaflouride you sound like Darth Vadar, and what the downsides of sulfur hexaflouride are here: http://goo.gl/LPSh0
